The day after I evacuated downtown Manhattan on September 11, 2001, after watching, in disbelief, as my native city’s skyline changed forever, I headed back. Cantor-Fitzgerald papers gathered around my ankles, ashes and smoke filled my lungs, fresh rubble crunched beneath my shoes.
